The ad under examination is the cover art for a hit single, “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. The photograph debuted on both artists’ Instagrams on August 3rd, 2020, just a few days before the record was released. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are both known for being powerhouses in the rap industry, so this release had high expectations from fans.
In a nutshell, the imagery in this ad is vibrant and thought-provoking. With a hot pink background, pink and gold theme, and symmetrical design this cover art was instantly iconic for both artists. The artists have pink and gold makeup, both done up with over-the-top updos and gold, statement “WAP” hoop earrings. Both appearing to be topless, the promiscuity suggested by the artists in this ad embodies the empowered attitude with which both are familiar. As part of the symmetry, both artists are sticking out their tongues with a rather unphased facial expression, giving an indifferent attitude suggesting they do not care what people think. This is innately rebellious, as the cover’s visual rhetoric is to convey the overall attitude of the artists’ personas, and how they will be exhibited in the song to come. This ad is showing viewers that the artists are a force to be reckoned with and that they have a powerful piece of art that is about to be released.
With minimal text in this image, the creators decided to let the imagery speak for itself. The text that is included, however, is simply the names of the artists written vertically running down the sides of the cover, and the earrings that say “WAP.” Having such little text forces the viewer to focus on the art direction of the cover art, while still appreciating the epic font used for the artists’ names.
The key elements of the cover art feature the artists sticking their tongues out, the use of color, and the symmetry. When the viewer sees this image for the first time, their eyes are drawn to the center, making one focus on the connected updos, and the color contrast between the artists’ hair and the pink backdrop. Next, the eyes are drawn out towards the artist’s facial expressions, giving this image movement. All of these impressions are what make this cover art persuasive. These elements of the cover art persuade the viewer that the artists are going to pursue what they want in an empowered way, that they are comfortable with their bodies, and that they are a powerful duo.
The overall message from this ad is sexually liberated, and tells people that these artists put care into their work, (what with the meticulous makeup and hair), and they are empowered regardless of what people may think.
